It's Not The Size of Your Data, It's How You Use It

It's not the size of your data, it's how you use it

We recently stumbled across an article in Wired UK that predicts that "Mathematicians will lead the next consumer tech market disruption". Intrigued, we read on only to find that we agree wholeheartedly with their forecast. The volume of data being made available to consumers these days is beyond overwhelming. Technology is affording us access to an unprecedented level of detailed social, physical, biometric, medical and resource information. How can one ever disseminate all available information to focus in on what's relevant, and apply it meaningfully into their lives? Mathematicians, it seems, will be the key. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"New sensor-based consumer products, such as the emerging market for "wellness" monitors, are first to take advantage of this -- putting the more advanced insights enabled by data algorithms directly into consumers' hands for the first time. Using smartphones and tablets as a platform, or a gateway to the internet, these new devices combine new low-cost sensor technology and the near ubiquity of short or long-range wireless connectivity. This enables them to deliver far more immersive user experiences than are possible with the limited range of sensors, such as GPS, that are present today in smartphones and a small minority of other consumer products." 

Orpyx is developing a sensor-based insole that provides plantar pressure feedback to the user via mobile app or wristband display. The system is focused primarily towards the almost 30 million North Americans with diabetes. Over 60% of diabetics will develop a condition known as peripheral neuropathy over the course of their disease. One of the complications of peripheral neuropathy is the loss of sensation in the feet which can lead to infection, ulceration and amputation. Over 90,000 lower extremity amputations are performed annually in the US alone as a direct result of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Orpyx's platform technology is not what will set us apart from competitors, nor will it provide the 'immersive user experiences' referenced above. It's Orpyx's proprietary software that will turn the glut of raw data the insoles collect, into meaningful information for the consumer. Our software engineers have created complex algorithms that transform data into a series of notifications designed to alert the wearer, in real-time, when excessive plantar pressure is reached in predetermined high-risk regions. With this focused information, the consumer can effectively offload pressure to help avoid complications of peripheral neuropathy, most notably, ulcerations. In this way, Orpyx hopes to be able to deliver far more than useful information to our consumer; we hope our technology becomes a vehicle to increase self-awareness, confidence and empowerment.
